Eureka! Lecture Series

The Eureka Lecture Series aims to spark innovation and entrepreneurial action among students by inviting today’s most talented, creative, and thoughtful individuals to campus to speak on a variety of issues. All-new for 2008-2009, EP will be hosting speakers from all backgrounds—medicine, publishing, software, and more – for Eureka each month. Following each lecture will be a question and answer session with each guest as well an idea exchange to encourage the free flow of ideas, crucial to entrepreneurship, between Brown’s best and brightest.


Jon Fisher
Bharosa, Inc. (acquired by Oracle)

Jon B. Fisher served as Bharosa, Inc.'s CEO until its successful acquisition by Oracle Corporation in July 2007. Jon became Oracle's Vice President Product Management assisting with the release of Oracle Adaptive Access Manager 10g. Jon completed his engagement with Oracle in November 2007.

Currently, Jon serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Francisco's school of business. An entrepreneurship aficionado, Jon lectures frequently at university business schools. Named Ernst & Young's 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year in California , Jon has served as CEO of three software companies in the Silicon Valley over the past 15 years.

Benjamin Palmer
The Barbarian Group

Benjamin Palmer serves as the CEO of The Barbarian Group, with over ten years of design experience in print, broadcast and interactive. Benjamin has come to be one of the most respected voices in the world of interactive and digital advertising. He was named one of Creativity Magazine’s 50 top creatives – one of the only ones from the digital world. He has served as interactive jury president for the 2007 Asia Pacific Ad Fest along with being on countless other award show committees.

Since co-founding the Barbarian Group, Benjamin has received acclaim worldwide for such projects as the Burger King Subservient Chicken site, which he thought up with Crispin, Porter & Bogusky. He has also helped create innovative interactive and motion video work for Volkswagen, Apple, Tecmo Inc., Ikea, Virgin Airlines and Marilyn Manson. For several years, Benjamin has been working in the video and film arena, both artistically and professionally. He has done motion video work for clients as well as artistically, showing his short films at festivals worldwide.

Prior to The Barbarian Group, Benjamin worked with such clients as Nestlé, Volkswagen, Footjoy, Olympus, Fleet, The Big Brother Association of America, TJ Maxx, Fidelity and Marshalls. Benjamin has also done extensive print work, having designed flyers for local nightclubs for over ten years, as well as several CD covers. In the broadcast realm, Benjamin has produced, shot and edited several short films, promotional trailers and installation videos. His video work has been shown at major clubs around Boston. Benjamin is also a video and sound designer, and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for Physics and Chemical Engineering.

Jay Parkinson, MD, MPH

Dr. Parkinson is an accomplished physician based in New York City. He opened the first medical practice in the US to marry the latest forms of digital communication with house calls. Dr. Parkinson and his practice have been featured in Wired, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo’s People of the Web, and on multiple television appearances. Dr. Parkinson communicates with patients via the internet -- e-mail, instant messaging, video chatting, and text messages -- and then sees them in their homes or offices, because he has no office.

Currently, Dr. Parkinson is the Chief Medical Officer of Myca, a Canadian health informatics company responsible for HelloHealth, a revolutionary approach to delivering healthcare based on Dr. Parkinson’s unique practice.

Terry Lozoff & Brett Zaccardi

Street Attack is a Boston-based alternative-marketing agency which is tapped into the pulse of the modern voice and the new social landscape. Since 2001, the company has been charting their own course in the ever changing industry of non-traditional marketing and advertising. Street Attack’s mantra is about building authentic connections, expanding their street-level network, and finding new and unique ways to change the way people think about communication.

Terry Lozoff and Brett Zaccardi are the co-founders of the firm and also act as president and CEO, respectively. They have well over a decade of experience behind them in the world of nontraditional advertising and marketing.

Drew Curtis & Joe Peacock

Drew Curtis is the mastermind behind Fark.com, the user-driven “Oddly Enough” news aggregator which receives hundreds of millions of visits per year. Drew’s website features content which is routinely showcased on programs such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a significant portion of programming broadcast on terrestrial and satellite radio networks. Drew and Joe, who is Fark’s chief user interface developer are also both accomplished authors and will be discussing how to create and launch successful ventures without the aid of venture capital.

Christian Lander
Stuff White People Like

Expensive sandwiches, recycling, tea, and the idea of soccer. These are all things which, according to graduate student, Christian Lander, white people like. Lander rocketed to instant success all in part to his blog, Stuff White People Like, "the definitive [and hilarious] guide to the unique taste of millions". Now with a book of the same title from Random House, Mr. Lander will be discussing his experiences navigating the publishing industry and the story of his pop culture phenomenon.

Kyle MacDonald
One Red Paperclip

In 2005, Kyle MacDonald began his first of a series of increasingly valuable barters. Approximately one year later, he had traded his way all the way from one red paperclip to a house in Saskatchewan, Canada. The trade landed Kyle a Guinness World Record (Most Valuable Internet Trade) and instant stardom. The entire story has been documented in MacDonald’s aptly titled book, One Red Paperclip. DreamWorks SKG has recently purchased the film rights to Kyle’s story.
